Yeah the boys!! Get the lads together and set off for a weekend of beers, brews, beaches and boating.
Day 1: Check in and taste the local tipples
There is nothing quite like the anticipation of a weekend getaway and the excitement of checking in to your sweet digs.
Depending on what type of accom you are after, there are a variety of options. If you want a beachside apartment, check out Don Pancho by the Beach. Delivering some major Mediterranean vibes and being right on the beach, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Spain. Check out C Bargara Resort for great oceanfront verandahs and lots of room for the whole gang. If your style is more roll out the swag and call it a day, then a night or two on the sand at Palm Beach, Kinkuna would be our shout for a wild getaway.
It's time to kickstart your weekend, and how else than cellar door tour of some of our favourite tipples. Hit up John and the team at the Bundaberg Shuttle Service, leave the car keys at home and relax as your chauffeured in style.
First stop on your pilgrimage of Bundaberg’s top sips, the iconic Bundaberg Rum Distillery Visitor Experience. Book in for a Blend Your Own Rum experience for the gift that keeps on giving and that will remind you of your time in the Bundaberg region for weeks to come (if it lasts that long). This is a truly unique experience where you get to be the ultimate mixologist of your own blend of Bundaberg Rum, complete with custom label. If you aren’t a huge rum drinker, but interested in how this big brand from lil’ Bundy got so big, head along for a distillery tour which runs every hour on the hour from 10am.
This is truly a drinks tour to start your trip with a bang, head to Ohana Cider House and Tropical Winery, grab a tasting paddle and pop Orange & Ginger, Passionfruit, Pineapple, Dry Hopped and Original on the tasting list. They also have a range of liqueurs (if they have lime or limoncello it’s amazing) and offer cheese platters to go with your arvo bevvies.
The only way to round off an arvo like that is with a hearty feed and a few final brews. Head to Ballistic Bargara, with a rad array of beers on tap, jugs of inhouse cocktails and live music from the likes of resident DJ Brad Marsellos, it’s pretty packed with atmosphere. Feast on loaded pizzas, Korean style chicken wings and pulled pork sliders to fill your belly, before heading home and hitting the hay.
Local Tip - Try the Talus IPA, Hawaiian Haze, Reef Pale and Low Ha - all full of flavour and pack a punch.
Day 2: Meet one of our Ladies of the Reef
Book in for a day of snorkelling, diving and other ocean experiences with the Lady Musgrave Experience. This is a day trip not to be missed, swimming with turtles, manta rays, sharks and a variety of reef fish and other wildlife on this adventure to the Southern Great Barrier Reef. It’s a 4 hour return boat trip and you will have 5 hours on the island and in the lagoons surrounding Lady Musgrave with all of the snorkel or dive equipment provided as part of your trip. This boat can also drop you out there for a full unforgettable camping experience (take literally everything, pack the kitchen sink, this is as natural as it gets). If your gang are all keen divers, then book into the underwater bunk bed accommodation for the experience of a lifetime, and spend the weekend sleeping and swimming with the creatures under the surface of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
If you’d rather be above the fishes than beside them, Truansea Charters offer a full or half day fishing adventure and to get the most out of your time in the region, a half day will do it for this trip! It’s a 5 hour trip fishing inshore reefs for Sweetlip, Spanish Mackerel, Snapper and other species. You can take off for a 7-12 noon trip or 12:15pm to 5:15pm. Luke has a range of other options on the table like river fishing, free diving, surfing and more so get in touch if you have something in mind.
All of that swimming in the sunshine would of worked up a mighty appetite, so where better to refuel than KBR’s. Just a stones throw from the beach and set amongst the tranquil surrounds of Kellys Beach Resort, this family run local institute pride themselves on quality produce, fresh ingredients and a whole lotta flavour.
Locals Tip – The chicken pesto is *mwah* chefs kiss
Day 3: Putt’in and Prawns
Today, you get to relax a little bit more to get ready to go back to the real world. Finish off your boys trip with a round of golf at Bargara Golf Club - you choose 9 or 18 holes. There are clubs available to hire and buggies and a bistro with cold bevs whether you’re celebrating or commiserating your round.
After working up a sweat, make your way to your final stop on this weekend of eating, drinking, laughing and repeating - Grunskes By The River Seafood Market and Restaurant. Your eyes will be bigger than your belly with masses of locally caught seafood, carried from crawler to kitchen right in front of you. We’re talking hot and cold seafood platters, Moreton Bay Bugs soaking in garlic butter, buckets of prawns ready to tear and share, and even options for the not fans of the not so fishy. Take in the sight of the beautiful Burnett River, as you chow down and prepare to bid farewell to the little corner of paradise you’ve grown so fond of.
