From family memories to family business

With the dream of bringing the magnificent The Paragon Theatre back to life, Merissa Craft has dedicated her days to restoring the Childers icon that welcomes everyone into town.

In the family for close to 60 years, the theatre became a second home to Merissa while growing up in the hinterland town. From running up the creaky, wooden stairs with her crush and sharing their first kiss while hiding from her grandfather to raising her own children inside the theatre’s residence, the building holds a special place in Merissa’s heart.

When her grandparents were no longer able to operate the theatre, Merissa took on the building without hesitation to ensure the heritage-listed building which holds so many memories for her family, stayed in the family. Thanks to Merissa’s passion for keeping the Paragon in its original manner, much of what you see, is what Childers locals saw those many moons ago. Inside the building, you’re greeted by the original ticket office, resembling something you only see in movies now, and the timber lattice laced walls, so unique to Queensland.

To ensure the longevity of the Childers icon, Merissa opened an espresso bar inside the building not long ago. When not working on the latest restoration project, it’s here where you’ll often see Merissa, catching up with people she knew as a child over another Childers icon her family is known for, Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream.

It’s no wonder why Merissa, and the generations before her, fell in love with The Paragon Theatre. Why not come experience the grandeur of the theatre for yourself on your next holiday. Don’t worry, you won’t miss this landmark as you drive through.
