Hit the Beach

Whether you’re getting lost in the story of a good book under the Casuarina trees, or the little ones are playing make believe mermaids in the waves, with a 16km stretch of pristine secluded coastline, you’ll feel like you’re in your own little world. So pull up your camp chair, slap on your sunscreen and get the your annual family beach cricket championship underway.

Banksia Walking Track

Stretch your legs and take a stroll through the shaded trees of the Banksia Walking Track. Located almost directly behind NRMA Woodgate Beach Holiday Park, this 5.2km return stretch of boardwalk and natural pathway is an ideal activity in the cool of the afternoon, to take in the lush tea tree wetland, towering cabbage palm stands and forests of eucalypts and banksias. This is a grade 2 walking track, with the first 800m return being pram and wheelchair friendly.

Mon Repos Turtle Encounters

Holidays are all about making memories to last a lifetime, and nothing is quite as memorable as seeing a baby turtle emerge from its nest and make it’s dash to the big open ocean. Every year between November – January, the sands of Mon Repos come alive with nesting mummas hauling up on the dunes to lay a clutch of eggs, and then between January - March the nests erupt with hundreds of frantic hatchlings, learning how to use their flippers for the very first time. Southern Great Barrier Reef

With the Southern Great Barrier Reef just at the tip of your flippers, what better time to schedule in some island hopping. A quick 30 minute scenic flight from Bundaberg will have you landing on the coral cay of Lady Elliot Island. Spend your day snorkelling around this world heritage listed destination, meeting the friendly local mantra rays, resident loggerheads and even the illusive Bubbles the dolphin, or bring out your inner marine biologist with a rockpool ramble through the lagoon with a master reef guide. Alternatively, you can also hop aboard the luxury catamaran ‘Reef Empress’ with Lady Musgrave Experience. Take in the magic of the Southern Great Barrier Reef with an educational guided island walks, glass bottom boat tours and a buffet lunch of fresh local produce from the deck of the Lady Musgrave HQ Pontoon before diving into snorkel through the pristine crystal clear waters of the lagoon.

Reel-y Good Fishing

No boat? No worries! From Theodolite Creek all the way down to Walkers Point, there are plenty of spots to cast a line from the shore (be sure to ask the team at NRMA Woodgate Beach Holiday Park for their local tips and hotpsots). We are hook line and sinker for a  freshly caught fish, baked over the campfire and paired with some of the local produce the Bundaberg Region is famed for, so once you’ve caught your feed, head back to the on-site fish cleaning station and camp kitchen to cook up a storm. But don’t feel too much pressure, there’s always the on-site café or fish and chip shop down the road if you don’t want to do the washing up.

Theodolite Creek

A favourite amongst the locals and true hidden gem just 5km from NRMA Woodgate Beach Holiday Park, you’ll find Bundaberg’s answer to The Whitsundays, Theodolite Creek. At low tide this little spot at the mouth of the river is a picture of swirling sands and sparkling turquoise. Perfect for a SUP session or to let your 4-legged pals off leash for a splash.

4WD Adventures

Roll down the windows, let some fresh sea air into your lungs (and some air out of your tyres) with a cruise along the Kinkuna Beach in Burrum Coast National Park. Where bush and beach overlap seamlessly, navigate the 4WD tracks before setting up for the day on the sand, taking in uninterrupted ocean views in your own little slice of paradise.

Discover the local wildlife

Experience nature at it’s finest with a stroll at dawn or dusk to spot the kangaroos that spend their days chilling under the shade(and sometimes even the lawn bowls green). Woodgate Beach is also a firm favourite amongst avid bird watchers, with its varying habitats allowing a diverse range of feathered friends to call it home, such as the endangered little tern, near threatened square tailed kite and vulnerable glossy black-cockatoo. Similarly to the roos’ the birds are most visible and vocal during the cooler parts of the day.
