The Ultimate Pacific Coast Way Detour: 5 Days in Bundaberg & the Southern Great Barrier Reef

When the open road calls, Queensland’s Pacific Coast Way delivers. Stretching from Brisbane to Cairns, it’s a bucket-list drive packed with coastal charm, country soul, and world-class experiences. But for those in the know, the real magic begins with a short detour — off the highway and into the heart of the Bundaberg Region, where reef meets rum, turtles nest on moonlit shores, and the warmth of the locals is matched only by the sunshine.

Here’s your perfect five-day itinerary for the ultimate Bundaberg & Southern Great Barrier Reef escape.

Day 1: Sip, Savour & Settle In

Ease into your Pacific Coast Way detour with a scenic drive through Childers, a heritage town where sugarcane fields roll past grand old pubs and historic shopfronts. As the road opens toward Bundaberg, so too does your introduction to the region’s signature flavours — bold, homegrown, and best enjoyed slowly.

This is a day of meeting the makers, tasting the difference, and soaking in that laid-back coastal hospitality.

Start with a brunch that sets the tone at Water Street Kitchen, a hidden gem tucked in a leafy neighbourhood. Helmed by husband-and-wife duo Jen and Alex Cameron, this suburban sanctuary plates up polished, produce-driven dishes like chilli scrambled eggs, macadamia-laced pastries, and fresh juices that celebrate the region’s bounty.

From there, it’s time to fizz things up at the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel. This isn’t your average tasting room — it’s a sensory playground of bubbling brews, nostalgic flavours, and Aussie classics. Try your way through a flight of 14 handcrafted drinks (ginger beer, grapefruit, sarsaparilla, and more), then mix and match your top six to take on the road.

No introduction to Bundaberg is complete without visiting its most iconic spirit. At the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, join the Blend Your Own experience where you’ll explore the inner workings of the distillery, learn the craft of blending, and bottle your very own signature rum to savour long after the trip ends.

As the day winds down, head riverside for a relaxed seafood dinner at Grunske’s By The River. Watch the Burnett River glow under the sunset as you feast on locally caught prawns, reef fish and oysters — paired, of course, with a crisp drink and that golden Queensland light.

Day 2: Island Magic

Rise early for a day you’ll never forget, as you venture to Lady Elliot Island — the southernmost island on the Great Barrier Reef, known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. There’s something truly magical about visiting the reef during the winter months. With the cooler waters come unparalleled visibility, making this the perfect time to experience the reef in all its glory. The crystal-clear waters create an almost surreal underwater world, where every fish, coral, and manta ray is brilliantly illuminated by the sun.

As you take off for a scenic flight over the turquoise waters, you’ll spot the reef’s vibrant coral gardens and the gentle outline of Lady Elliot Island, surrounded by pristine beaches and rich marine life. Once you land, it’s time to dive right in. Whether you’re snorkelling or diving, the water here offers a stunning clarity, revealing every intricate detail of the underwater ecosystem.

Winter also brings the manta rays — graceful, wide-winged creatures that glide effortlessly through the warm currents of the reef. The island is a hotspot for these majestic animals, and during your time here, you may get lucky enough to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles. Alongside the manta rays, migrating whales are frequently spotted during winter, making their way along the coastline. These majestic giants can be seen breaching and tail-slapping in the distance — a truly humbling sight against the vast ocean backdrop.

For those who wish to immerse themselves even further, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort offers guided reef walks, snorkelling excursions, and informative eco-tours led by passionate marine experts. After a day of exploring, begin to wind down and absorb the peaceful surroundings, knowing you've had an unforgettable reef experience during one of the best times of year to visit.

Day 3: Culture & Connection

Start the day with breakfast under the trees at The Garden Mill, where the coffee is strong and the garden surrounds invite slow sips and deep breaths.

Then, connect with Country on a powerful Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tour. Led by Traditional Owners, Bec and Waszie, this half-day experience offers an honest, engaging insight into First Nations culture, language, and history of Taribelang Bunda. Immerse in dreaming and walk away with a lasting connection to the land, the stories, and the people on their Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Tour.

That afternoon, head to Splitters Farm, a tranquil sanctuary just outside Bundaberg. Wander lush paddocks, feed rescued animals, or paddle down Splitters Creek – If you’re lucky you might spot a platypus or two among this fresh water oasis. Love splitters so much you don’t want to leave? Choose to stay with their Glamping Tents, Retro Campers and powered and unpowered sites to cater to everyone’s needs to complete your wholesome, hands-on, and completely heartwarming experience.

Day 4: Nature, Wildlife & Macadamias

Your fourth day is a celebration of all things local. Start with a ride or stroll along the Turtle Trail, a scenic journey along Bargara’s Esplanade, Nielson Beach, and Mon Repos Conservation Park, home to one of the South Pacific's most important turtle nesting and hatchling sites. Each year during turtle season (November to March) the area comes alive with hundreds of turtles nesting and hatching each year. Along your trail, take a moment to learn about a turtle's lifecycle and conservation efforts of dedicated QPWS Mon Repos Turtle Rangers at Mon Repos Turtle Centre. If you manage to pull yourself away from the miracles of Mon Repos and have time to spare, continue along the trail passing through hidden gems like Oaks Beach before reaching Burnett Heads Headland, where the historic South Head Lighthouse offers stunning coastal views. The full length of the trail is 11km with a moderate grade of difficulty. If you're strapped for time, loop back towards Bargara after Mon Repos.

Next, dive into the fascinating world of coral cultivation at Monsoon Aquatics. Their coral farm tour reveals how this Bundaberg-based business is helping restore and protect reef ecosystems one frag at a time — and the colours alone will leave you speechless.

Midday, head to Macadamias Australia, where you’ll explore the heart of this generational farming family, producing some of the world’s finest nuts. Wander the orchard with a guided tour, enjoy a tasting, and grab a farm-fresh lunch from the on-site café, The Orchard Table where tree-to-table eats are piled high on you plate and filled to the brim of your glass.

As one of Australia's largest producing regions, finish your day with a sweet stop at Tinaberries, local farm-gate and strawberry farm just a stone throw from the shores of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Here, strawberries are at their juiciest, ice cream is freshly handmade from local produce, and the views are as irresistible as the treats themselves. Set in lush garden surrounds with ample space to unwind, this is the perfect place to slow down, savour, and embrace the laid-back beauty of the region. If you’re lucky enough to visit during strawberry season, you can pick your own punnet before challenging your travel buddies to a game of giant Connect 4. Sweet in every sense, this stop offers a genuine taste of Bundaberg’s relaxed lifestyle.

Day 5: Roam you Way

Your final day is yours to tailor. Nature lovers might take a hike out to the Utopia Rock Pools nestled among Mt Walsh National Park, a granite-strewn paradise with waterholes perfect for a refreshing dip after a fresh dosing of rain. Fishing fans can drop a line at Lake Monduran, one of Australia’s top spots to catch barramundi. Simply linger a little longer in Bargara, soaking in the relaxed beach town vibes with coffee, salt air, and one last barefoot stroll. Or plan your next getaway around the regions major destination events where celebrations champion local, great food and great vibes!
